Compare Refrigerated Vans and Trucks: Which One Fits Your Load?

Nine vehicle classes, from a 1-ton van to a 12-ton truck, one honest comparison. Pick the temperature band your cargo must never leave, then the size you can actually fill, and rent nothing bigger or colder than the job needs.

Compare

Choose in this order: temperature first, then how you unload, then size, then who drives. Fresh cargo goes in a chiller van, and frozen cargo in a freezer van. Once you’re counting pallets, you need a refrigerated truck or a tail lift truck if the drop point has no dock. Port and container work goes on a reefer truck. Most wrong bookings come from picking by size first and finding out at the drop point that the vehicle can’t be unloaded there.

02 All Seven Vehicles Side by Side

Every vehicle comes with a working refrigeration unit, GPS tracking, and a temperature log. What changes are the temperature band, how much it carries, how it’s loaded, and who drives it? On a phone, scroll the table sideways.

03 Chiller or Freezer: Settle Temperature First

Temperature is the one choice you can’t fix on the day. A van that’s too small means a second trip. A van with the wrong refrigeration unit means a spoiled load. So we start every booking with the cargo, not the vehicle.

A chiller unit holds 2°C to 8°C and a freezer unit holds −18°C and below. These are different machines, not two settings on the same dial. A chiller van turned all the way down still won’t hold frozen cargo. Going the other way, a freezer van isn’t a safer choice for fresh goods. Lettuce, soft fruit, dairy and cut flowers can all be damaged by cold that’s too deep, and you pay a higher day rate for the privilege.

  • Fresh produce, dairy, bakery, prepared meals and flowers: chiller van
  • Ice cream, frozen meat, seafood and frozen bakery: freezer van
  • Most medicines and vaccines (2–8°C): chiller range with a full temperature log, see refrigerated delivery
  • Pallet volumes in either band: refrigerated truck fitted with a chiller or freezer body

04 Van or Truck: Boxes, Pallets and the Drop Point

The usual line between a van and a truck is simple. Vans carry cartons and crates that someone loads by hand. Trucks carry pallets moved by forklift or pallet truck. If your stock leaves the warehouse already on pallets, breaking it down into boxes to fit a van costs labour twice: once to break it down and again to unload it.

The drop point matters as much as the load. A standard refrigerated truck assumes a dock or a forklift at the far end. Plenty of UAE drop points have neither, like ground-floor shops, residential towers, older warehouses and event sites. For those, a tail lift truck brings its own hydraulic platform, so pallets reach the ground without one.

City access often decides it before payload does

In dense districts, a bigger vehicle can carry more and still finish fewer drops. Narrow service roads, low basement ramps and timed delivery windows all favour a van. On a multi-drop city route, two chiller vans often outrun one truck. That’s why restaurants and grocery runs mostly book vans even when the total weight would fit a truck.

05 Self-Drive or With a Driver

The small vehicles can be self-driving. The 1-ton refrigerated pickup and the small fridge van run on a standard UAE light-vehicle license. They suit event caterers, market traders, and home food businesses who’d rather keep control of timing themselves.

From the 3-tonne class upward, most bookings include a driver. Trucks, tail lift trucks and reefer trucks always do, because they need a heavy-vehicle licence, and a tail lift needs a trained operator under load. A driver who knows the routes also keeps door-open time short, and on a hot afternoon that matters more to cargo temperature than the vehicle itself.

06 Each Vehicle in One Minute

Here’s when to pick each vehicle and when to skip it. Each card links to that vehicle’s full rental page.

1-Ton Refrigerated Pickup

A pickup with an insulated, refrigerated box on the back. It parks anywhere a car can and drives on a standard UAE licence.

Pick it when your load is a handful of crates and you’d rather drive it yourself.

Fridge Van (Self-Drive)

A small chilled van you collect, drive and return. Good for one event or one weekend.

Pick it when it’s a one-off chilled job and you have someone to drive.

Chiller Van

The most booked vehicle we run. It fits city loading bays and basement car parks and handles ten or more drops a day.

Pick it when your cargo is fresh, not frozen, and fits in cartons or crates.

Freezer Van

Built for deep-frozen cargo. It has a stronger compressor and denser insulation than a chiller van of the same size.

Pick it when the load must arrive frozen solid, especially on a route with lots of door openings.

Refrigerated Truck

The step up from vans. You’d book one when you’re counting pallets, not boxes.

Pick it when you move palletised stock and both ends have a dock or a forklift.

Tail Lift Truck

A refrigerated truck with a hydraulic platform at the back that lowers to the ground, so pallets roll on and off without a dock.

Pick it when you deliver pallets to places with no loading bay or forklift.

08. Four Booking Mistakes We See Every Week

  • Booking by weight alone. A 3-tonne load of light, bulky cartons fills a van well before it reaches its weight limit. Tell us the box count, not just the kilos.
  • Forgetting the far end. The truck loads easily at your warehouse, then reaches a shop with no dock. Check the drop point before you choose between a standard truck and a tail lift.
  • Choosing freezer “to be safe”. It costs more and can harm fresh cargo. Match the band to the product.
  • Loading a warm vehicle. Every vehicle needs time to pull down to temperature before loading. Book with enough lead time and the unit will be at setpoint when you start.

09. Frequently Asked Questions About Compare Refrigerated Van

Neither is better. They do different jobs. A chiller van holds 2°C to 8°C for fresh food, dairy, flowers and most medicines. A freezer van holds −18°C and below for ice cream, frozen meat and seafood. Pick the one that matches the temperature your cargo has to stay at.

It’s not a safe default. Produce, dairy and flowers can be damaged by cold that’s too deep, and a freezer van costs more per day. Book a freezer van only when something in the load has to stay frozen.

Move up to a truck when you start counting pallets instead of boxes. Vans carry cartons and crates loaded by hand. A 7.5-tonne refrigerated truck takes 6 to 8 pallets, and a 12 to 17-tonne truck takes 12 to 16.

For box loads, any van works because you unload by hand. For pallets, book a tail lift truck. Its hydraulic platform lowers to the ground, so a pallet truck can roll the load on and off without a dock or a forklift.

Yes on the smaller vehicles. The 1-ton refrigerated pickup and the small fridge van run on a standard UAE light-vehicle licence. Trucks, tail lift trucks and reefer trucks are booked with a licensed driver.

Four things: the temperature the cargo needs, roughly how many boxes or pallets you have, whether the drop point has a dock or forklift, and whether you’ll drive or need a driver. That’s enough for dispatch to confirm the right vehicle in one call.
